This behavioral question asks you to demonstrate practical experience managing risk in engineering or project-based work. You'll be expected to share concrete, real-world examples where you identified potential threats, analyzed their impact, chose mitigation tactics, and communicated trade-offs to stakeholders.

Start by describing the context: the project, timeline, and constraints. Walk through how you detected the risk (technical debt, scaling failure, vendor dependency, security/compliance gap), how you assessed likelihood and impact, and how you prioritized it among competing issues. Explain the mitigation strategy you proposed (short-term containment, long-term redesign, monitoring, rollback plans) and why you selected that approach. Interviewers will look for evidence of decision-making under uncertainty, cost/benefit thinking, and adaptive strategies when initial plans didn’t work.

Expect the flow to include: risk identification, analysis/prioritization, mitigation planning, stakeholder alignment and approvals, implementation and monitoring, and post-mortem/lessons learned. You should show collaboration with product, QA, SRE, and managers, and describe how you tailored communication to non-technical stakeholders.
